Radio astronomers have discovered that stars emit their own signature radio frequencies. These can be converted to audio signals, which have their own distinct sound and pitch. A red dwarf star has a low, powerful note. A blue supergiant has a loud, static hiss and hum. Each star is different and unique.
Starsong is composed almost entirely of these real star audio recordings, except for the lead synth sound in the instrumental breaks. The lyrics speak of the wonder of these stars through an adaptation of the well-known children’s rhyme “Star light, star bright”, and comment on how deep space, once thought to be silent and peaceful, is actually chaotic and noisy.
lyrics
Star light, star bright
First star I hear tonight
I wish I may, I wish I might
Be the first to hear your song tonight
I turn my ear, hear the sound
Crashing waves reach the ground
All around the song surrounds
The roar of empty space abounds
A red dwarf, a neutron star
Thermonuclear orchestra
Sing with a resounding voice
The universe leaves me no choice
Star light, star bright
Three millionth star I hear tonight
I wish I may, I wish I might
Be free from all this noise tonight
